Today is a defining day for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as the Supreme Court is expected to give its ruling on the bail applications in the alleged liquor policy scandal. The widely publicised case was last presented for hearing on September 5 before a bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan. This was so since the court had heard both the parties and had even reserved its judgement.

Kejriwal’s defence counsel, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, pointed out that Kejriwal’s name does not appear in the FIR lodged in 2022 and accused the police of having arrested Kejriwal in June when his arrest was not warranted. While the CBI has accused Kejriwal of being part of the criminal conspiracy on the 2G scam.

The Implementation of today’s decision can prove to be very influential on the way Delhi will be run. Although, if Kejriwal gets bail then, he is likely to come back to Delhi and enhance the pace of the delayed development plans and regular working of the Delhi government. In his absence vital government operations such as the cabinet meetings have slowed down or even stopped since his incarceration. Also, the Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor election has also not yet been conducted. The nomination of the presiding officer which is normally conducted by the Lieutenant Governor following a recommendation by the Chief Minister has been on standby because of Kejriwal. Therefore, the term of Mayor Dr. Shelly Oberoi has been extended, and as per the rules, a new Mayor from the Scheduled Caste category will have to be appointed.
