Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the abolition of Article 370 and Article 35(A) as a “watershed moment” in the history of the country on Monday, stating that it marked the beginning of a new age of prosperity and advancement for Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh.

It has been five years since the Indian Parliament agreed to repeal Articles 370 and 35(A), a historic decision that changed the course of our country’s history.

On the fifth anniversary of the abolition of Article 370 and Article 35(A), Prime Minister Modi stated that the repeal brought opportunities, security, and dignity to women, youth, marginalized communities, backwards, and tribal people. He wrote on X, “It marked the beginning of a new age of prosperity and advancement in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. It meant that the Indian Constitution was applied in these areas in both letter and spirit, in keeping with the goals of the great men and women who drafted it. For women, young, the backward, tribal, and marginalized populations who were denied the benefits of development, abrogation brought stability, dignity, and opportunity, the prime minister said. He also gave the people of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir the assurance that the BJP-led federal government will continue to work for their benefit.

In addition, it has made sure that corruption, which afflicted J.K. for many years, has been contained. In the upcoming times, our government will continue to work for the people of J&K and Ladakh and fulfill their dreams, PM Modi wrote on X. The region was divided into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, when the Center withdrew Article 370 in August 2019, giving the former state of Jammu and Kashmir unique status.
