Amit Shah to Grant Indian Citizenship to 188 Pakistani Hindus in Gujarat Under CAA: A Historic Milestone in Addressing Religious Persecution
The Home Minister of India, Amit Shah plans to grant Indian citizenship to 188 Pakistani Hindus in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on Sunday 18 August. This is the first time citizens have been granted under the CAA which is good for those escaping religious persecution in Pakistan. It past the consistent process of rehabilitation and inclusion of persecuted minorities into the Indian society.

Until now, Ahmedabad district of Gujarat has naturalized 1167 people, where Citizenship ceremony has been held earlier this year at District Collector’s office for 18 Pakistani migrants and they received their citizenship certificates. The first beneficiaries of the certificates under the CAA were in May in Delhi where fourteen people were issued with Indian citizenship. This occasion was described as a ‘historic day’ by Union Home Minister Shah especially for those who have been waiting for years for their asylum after facing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

The central government of India has recently modified some rules of the CAA where in documentation criteria have been ease up in the preference of applicants. Formerly, this mean that the applicant had to provide certain ties with its ancestors which have been a problem for many of them. Using the available information and organized in a structured format, it will be easier for members of persecuted minority from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to get the Indian citizenship as envisaged in the updated guidelines.

Passed in December 2019, the CAA grants citizenship to persecuted minorities from these countries every citizen of India who has entered India before the 31st of December 2014. While the law was enacted with presidential assent immediately on passing it through the Parliament, rules for its operation were only concluded in March 2024. CAA is controversial and street protests have been conducted against CAA declaring some aspect of it as anti-Muslim This led to deaths and lawlessness all over the country.
