Bangladesh Lodges Formal Protest Against Amit Shah’s Inflammatory Remarks on ‘Infiltrators’ During Jharkhand Election Rally, Urging India to Promote Sensitivity in Political Discourse
One of the major events in the diplomatic front, the Interim Government of Bangladesh expressed protest against Indian Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks characterizing the people of Bangladesh as ‘infiltrators’. This protest was officially done through a note, written to India’s Deputy High Commissioner stationed in Dhaka, in which Bangladeshi government conveyed their “deep sense of hurt and extreme displeasure” caused by statements made by Shah during an election rally held in Jharkhand. The protest note characterized his remarks as ‘highly deplorable’ and stressed that such language was ‘objectionable and unacceptable’ It urged India to steer its political leaders to prevent them from making such comments.

Speaking at a rally during the campaign, Amit Shah had vowed that if the BJP were to come to power, the government will not only deport the infiltrators but will take strict action against the Bangladeshis. He said, “We will teach every Bangladeshi infiltrator the lesson; we will develop the techniques to hang these people upside down.” Shah went on to lampoon political rivals by saying that all these ‘infiltrators’ were on their voting list and would be thrown out of the state if the BJP came to power in Jharkhand.

Some of his statements generated controversies as they seen to have eroded the spirit of ‘Courtesy and Respect’ between the two neighboring countries by demanding for more restraint in political rhetoric especially as it relates to Bangladeshi nationals.
