The situation in Manipur is getting worse by the day and there seems to be no end to the violence. Home Minister Amit Shah asks groups in Manipur to keep peace, but the situation is not under control yet. What is happening in Manipur?

The Home Minister had visited the state as a measure to invoke confidence among people and also met the different segments of society. Amit Shah also emphasized that the peace and prosperity of Manipur were a priority for the government. 

According to the official statement by the Ministry of Home Affairs- Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri @AmitShah held a meeting with Prominent personalities and delegation of the Civil Society Organisations in Churachandpur, Manipur.”

Shah has also requested the Kuki group to maintain peace. 

“He assured a permanent political solution for the tribals of the state while asking for 15 days of peace. As requested, we will maintain peace. But we have to defend ourselves if we are being attacked,” said Ginza Vualzong, spokesperson of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum, as reported by The Indian Express

It is also believed that Kuki leaders made 11 demands from the Government including “total separation from Manipur” as they have no faith in Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. 

The people in Manipur are now living under constant fear and the loss of life is disheartening.

When did the ethnic violence begin?

On May 3rd, a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized to protest the Meitei community’s demand for ST  (Scheduled Tribe) status. Thereafter, clashes broke out between the Kukis and Meities.

In the most recent news, three people were recently killed in a gunfight in Manipur’s Imphal district. The incident also left four injured.  The death toll from the clashes has reached 80 and there seems to be no end to it. More than thousands have been displaced due to these violent clashes.
