Allegations and Controversy Surrounding Mahua Moitra

Allegations against Mahua Moitra, contact with an approver, and the ongoing controversy raise questions about transparency and ethics in parliamentary processes.

BJP MP alleges contact with approver; Jai Anant Dehadrai vindicated; Emphasizing transparency & ethics with Mahua Moitra

In a recent twist in the ‘cash-for-questions’ controversy, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has made allegations against Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra. He claimed that Mahua Moitra was in contact with Darshan Hiranandani, who had turned approver in the case, and suggested that attempts were being made to influence him. This development comes in the wake of Mahua Moitra’s recent television interview where she admitted that her Parliament login had been shared with Darshan Hiranandani since 2019. She clarified that while Darshan’s staff assisted her in typing the questions, she was the one responsible for drafting them.

Denies house funding claim

During the interview, Mahua Moitra also displayed designs of her government accommodation, which she stated had been provided by Darshan. She vehemently denied allegations that Darshan had funded the renovation of her house and mentioned that the gifts she had received from him were limited to a scarf, makeup items, and car pick-up and drop services in Mumbai. Notably, she referred to Darshan Hiranandani as a close friend even before her tenure as an MP and expressed her discontent with the nature of the affidavit against her.

On the issue of Parliament logins, Mahua Moitra argued that there were no specific rules about who could have access to them, and typically, MPs’ teams were responsible for uploading questions. In response, Nishikant Dubey emphasized that every MP had to complete a form in which they pledged not to share their login credentials with others.

Allegations Vindicate Accuser

Jai Anant Dehadrai, who had brought allegations against Mahua Moitra, felt vindicated after her interview. He highlighted that this development helped him understand the context behind an incident where his dog, Henry, had been offered to him in exchange for withdrawing his CBI complaint. Jai suggested that such quid pro quo scenarios had become a disturbing norm.

Committee Examines Moitra Case

In her interview, Mahua Moitra made it clear that there was no exchange of cash involved and that Darshan Hiranandani did not need for her to ask questions in Parliament since he could file Right to Information (RTI) requests.

The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee had heard from Jai Anant Dehadrai and Nishikant Dubey, the individuals who had initially raised the allegations against Mahua Moitra. The committee had summoned Mahua Moitra to appear on October 31, but she indicated her unavailability on that day due to her constituency commitments in West Bengal. She expressed her readiness to cooperate after November 5. Additionally, Mahua noted that the committee had sought evidence from the complainants to support their allegations, but they were unable to provide any substantiating proof. This ongoing controversy underscores the importance of transparency and ethics in parliamentary processes.
