Death of Akshay Shinde in police custody raises questions, family claims it was a police encounter
The death of Akshay Shinde, accused in a sexual assault case in Badlapur, has ignited a major political controversy in Maharashtra. Shinde’s family claims that police killed him in an encounter, while the government insists officers acted in self-defense. The incident occurred when police were transporting Shinde for questioning from Taloja jail to Badlapur on September 23.

Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre has set up an eight-member inquiry committee to look into the circumstances surrounding Shinde’s death. The committee will be led by Additional Police Commissioner Punjabrao Ugle and includes various deputy and assistant commissioners of police.
Shinde’s family members, speaking outside JJ Hospital after the post-mortem, expressed deep grief and anger. His mother and uncle suggested a police conspiracy and questioned how he could have snatched a police officer’s gun. They claimed that Shinde had communicated distress during his detention, saying he was being beaten and had sent a message for money.
Shinde’s mother stated, The police have killed our child. My son was afraid of bursting crackers; how could he shoot at policemen? She called for an investigation into both the police actions and the school management where Shinde worked.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis maintain that the police acted in self-defense during an exchange of gunfire, asserting that Shinde shot at officers first after allegedly snatching a weapon.
Opposition leaders have voiced their concerns, demanding a thorough judicial investigation into the events leading up to Shinde’s death. They question the police narrative and suspect that evidence may have been destroyed to protect higher authorities. Critics also highlight the lack of accountability regarding the school management linked to Shinde.
Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress leaders have called for independent inquiries, arguing that the situation indicates systemic failures within Maharashtra’s law enforcement. As political tensions rise, the public demands clarity and justice in this troubling case.
