In a major blow to the united opposition front, numerous legislators from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have joined the Maharashtra government under the leadership of Eknath Shinde, following Ajit Pawar’s rebellion. Consequently, the Congress party has revealed that the forthcoming opposition meeting will be held in Bengaluru later this month.

In the aftermath of the Maharashtra incident, Congress general secretary (organization) K.C. Venugopal made a clear statement indicating that the opposition would not succumb to pressure. Venugopal explicitly attributed the NCP defections to the “dirty tricks department” of the BJP.

In response to the recent events in Maharashtra, the Congress leader strongly criticized the government, considering it as a result of corruption and illegitimate means. He expressed confidence that the people have recognized those involved in corruption and betrayal and promised that they would face consequences in the upcoming elections. The leader announced that an opposition meeting would take place on July 17 and 18 in Karnataka to establish a united front against the BJP, while extending full support to Sharad Pawar and his camp.

Pawar Confronts Leadership Challenge:

Sharad Pawar, the 83-year-old leader of the NCP, addressed the situation and expressed his belief that the party would regain its strength within three months. He also stated his intention to bring back the rebel legislators to his side. However, challenges lie ahead for Pawar, as the rebel leaders Ajit Pawar and Praful Patel claim to still be part of the NCP and assert the loyalty of a majority of MLAs. They may attempt to seize the NCP election symbol, similar to what happened with Eknath Shinde last year. Moreover, Pawar will need to restructure the party leadership due to prominent leaders switching sides with Ajit Pawar and Praful Patel. These developments may impact Sharad Pawar’s position within the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition in Maharashtra and the national opposition front against the BJP.
