On Friday, Rajendra Pal Gautam, AAP MLA and minister in Kejriwal’s Cabinet joined the Congress party. The action took place in response to the Seemapuri MLA’s AAP resignation, during which he expressed his desire to step up the fight for social justice.

This development is important as it came when the Congress Party and the Aam Admi Party were discussing having an alliance for the upcoming Haryana assembly election 2024. In the presence of party leader Pawan Khera, Delhi head Devender Yadav, and general secretary KC Venugopal, Gautam became a member of the Congress. After joining the Congress, he remarked that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s catchphrase, “Main nafrat ke baazar mein mohabbat ki dukaan kholne aaya hoon,” hit him deeply throughout the last ten years of escalating religious fanaticism.

Adding to that Rajendra Pal thanked the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal for giving him the opportunity to become the MLA twice.”I express gratitude to him for this but my fight is somewhere else.” He vowed to fight for pressing issues such as social justice, caste-based census, and representation. He pointed out that AAP maintains silence on these issues,” he said.
In October 2022, Gautam announced his resignation as the Minister of Social Welfare for Delhi, following a political uproar sparked by his purported remarks disparaging Hindu gods and goddesses. Rajkumar Anand was named as a minister in place of Gautam following his expulsion; however, both leaders have subsequently left the AAP.
