Modi Government Launches Nationwide Survey to Provide 2 Crore Houses to the Poor Under PMAY by March 2025

The Narendra Modi government has now initiated a survey to help the deprived section by choosing two crore people who will benefit from additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. It is a continuation of the BJP’s election promise in 2024 and has been set to be completed by March 31, 2025, with an emphasis on the requirements for housing in rural India.

The PMAY, a scheme that began in the year 2016 and transformed, has given millions of homes. In the first two terms of this government, it succeeded in adding four crore houses to its scheme. The BJP, in their manifesto for 2024, promised three crore additional houses to be added by March 2029-two crore in rural and one crore in urban. This survey is a step forward to achieve such an ambitious target.

Awaas+ 2024 has been released as an application on the mobile for ease of use. Under Prime Minister Modi, the app was introduced in September 2024, using face authentication technology to ease identification of eligible households. The states and Union territories have registered the surveyors and mapped them to the Gram Panchayats through the application. Along with the surveyor-led effort, it also offers self-survey by citizen based on Aadhaar-based e-KYC and face-based authentication, so no eligible household is left behind.

The Centre issued a communique to all the states and UTs on 27 December, 2024, underlining urgency in the task. It advised the state authorities to start this survey immediately, which should be completed within three months. In this dual mode of survey-the fieldwork together with citizen’s participation-completion is ensured as well as less exclusion risk can be avoided.

In addition, a survey for one crore urban houses under PMAY-Urban is also being conducted. This again strengthens the government’s commitment to “Housing for All.” Both initiatives bring out the holistic approach of the program in addressing housing challenges across rural and urban areas.

Therefore, PMAY is way more than providing shelter; it actually represents a bigger vision of upliftment and empowerment. For families, the act of building a house becomes an exercise of dignity and economic confidence, and a lot of people have actually achieved better living standards because of this program.

This puts the Modi government at the forefront of looking towards technology and proper timelines in the event that the changes they are implementing have enough strength to stick. The new year initiative goes further than just being a policy; it is a reaffirmation by the government that it would be committed to inclusive development and deliver aspirations for every Indian citizen. This ambitious plan will lay the foundation for a stronger, more equitable nation.
