Road Safety Concerns Arise: Tragic accident in Gilgit-Baltistan, 8 Killed in the  Tourist Bus plunge, Many Injured

Gilgit-Baltistan: According to Dawn, a tragic incident occurred in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday, where a van carrying tourists veered into a ravine that saw 8 killed in the tourist bus plunge, including a child. Nine others were injured in the accident near Babusar Pass.

Van-Car Collision:

The District Coordinator of Diamer Rescue 1122, Shaukat Riaz, confirmed the death toll and revealed that the accident happened when the van collided with a car. The van was reportedly carrying 16 tourists from Sahiwal to Gilgit.

Following the collision, the van caught fire, adding to the severity of the incident. The injured were promptly taken to the Chilas Regional Headquarters Hospital. Among the injured were four women, four children, and one man.

This unfortunate event is not an isolated incident, as earlier in the month, another tragic accident took place in the same region. Six people lost their lives, and 17 were injured when a bus carrying tourists plunged into a gorge on the Karakoram Highway near Thalichi.

Road Safety Crisis in Pakistan:

Pakistan’s road safety record has been marred by poorly-maintained motorways, lax safety regulations, and reckless driving. Buses are often overloaded with passengers, and the use of seatbelts is not common, contributing to the severity of such accidents.
