Suspension of 35 Kashmiri Students at Mewar University After Protests Over Unapproved BSc. Nursing Course Raises Concerns

In Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, Mewar University has put 35 Kashmiri students on suspension for protesting over the failure of the university to acquire proper accreditation for the BSc. Nursing course. These 35 were academically put in limbo when the institution did not seek approvals from Rajasthan Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council. Besides the 35, 10 others were also affected. Despite assurances by the university, which as recently as two months ago received a written commitment from the registrar, nothing has happened.

Regardless of rehashed confirmations from the college, including a composed responsibility from the enlistment center two months prior promising quick goal, no critical headway has been made.

Baffled by the postponement and the shortfall of replies, the understudies depended on fights. Accordingly, the college made a reformatory move, suspending 35 understudies as opposed to tending to their complaints.

Three days of protest action against doing nothing stirred the university to respond with punitive suspensions instead of redress by the administration over the students’ grievances. Suspension has been widely condemned-justly so-as both unjust and as a violation of students’ rights to pursue education-JKSA.

The risks for the academic futures of students are so great that the association is urging both governments of Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan to take action regarding the absence of accreditation.

The JKSA has demanded that either the accreditation issue be settled or there should be an outright transfer of students to the accredited institutions immediately to avoid further damage to education.

The situation has left many questioning the accountability of educational institutions and the protection of rights of students, especially in sensitive cases concerning the future careers of young professionals.

The case shall do much to highlight the need for proper accreditation and transparency for universities, especially in the case of offering professional courses such as nursing.
