26th trialogue2047: Empowering Cities through Circular Practices
Development Alternatives recently hosted its 26th trialogue2047, focusing on the urgent need for Circular Economy principles and Resource Efficiency in urban governance. The discussion, themed “Circularity in Action: Plastics Management for Cities of the Future,” brought together key stakeholders to address the pressing issue of plastic pollution.
The event highlighted the importance of empowering communities in the fight against plastic pollution and the need for a transformative approach to plastic waste management at the city level. Key speakers, including Shri G Asok Kumar, Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga, emphasized the significance of personal responsibility and the adoption of circular practices for a sustainable environment.
The dialogue also explored the concept of LiFE (Lifestyles for the Environment), promoting eco-conscious choices and responsible consumption to lead the way to sustainability. The focus was on aligning city practices with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

The discussion reached a consensus on the necessity for capacity development of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and behavior change in plastic value chain stakeholders. Raising awareness through education about the adverse impact of mishandled plastic waste was identified as a crucial step. Additionally, citizen-led initiatives focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic waste were discussed, along with the integration of the informal sector into municipal waste systems for social and economic benefits.
Resource efficiency and circularity were highlighted as pillars for shaping a sustainable environment, crucial for achieving the SDGs. Dr. Ashok Khosla, Chairman, Development Alternatives, stressed the need for collaboration between communities, businesses, and government bodies to transform infrastructure, housing, transport, utilities, and waste management systems.
Rita Dhodapkar, Science Secretary at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, emphasized the importance of advanced recycling infrastructure and innovation in meeting the goals of SDG 12.
Dr. Heinz Schandl from The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Australia, emphasized the need for a national, coordinated approach to address the complex problem of plastic waste.
trialogue2047 serves as Development Alternatives’ flagship discussion forum, fostering consensus on directions for India’s transition towards a sustainable future. The platform engages a multidisciplinary audience, including youth, in conversations with eminent speakers to address issues of sustainable development in India.
