The month of Sawan begins from July 22. Can Shivaling be created for Sawan Puja during this period? Sawan is lord Shiva’s favorite month and so there are certain protocols, which devotees must follow to worship the shivling during Sawan. It was considered that experiencing rains in Sawan month mean that god of gods, Mahadev is being worshipped. Everything that he likes is provided to him during the prayers so as to captivate his attention. Self purification is over and next ritual called Jalabhishek of shivling is performed. For performing Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva, he gets pleased and he offers the wishes of the Bhakt for which they do Jalabhishek to him.

The astrologers the Shiv Purana also explain the best way of installing the Shivling and how to worship it as Dr. Krishna Kumar Bhargava. Shiv Purana also states the same that the Shivling should be installed on a pilgrimage site, river bank or any place where lord shiva can be worshipped daily. Thus the auspicious time if used will yield auspicious results especially if using the Shivling for worship.

The placement of small shivling is also recommended for arrangement in the movable installation and the big shivling for the immovable installation. It is preferred that the Shivling should be installed with the base on the northern side and the devotee should head towards the eastern side to perform all the rituals. The shivling should ideally be made up of clay or iron and the back also should be as what the outside portion is. This is envisaged as the specificity of the immovable shivling.

If the shivling is required as a movable one then, The linga and the base of the shivling should be in the same material only. The length of the movable Linga should be the minimum size of 1 finger of the person who installed the structure.
In case of the immovable shivling, it slightly differs, where the length of the Linga should be equal to 12 fingers of the installer. Works of art can also be of a length greater than the span of 12 fingers. Place gold into a pit and nine types of gems. Then, they can meditate on Lord Shiva through chanting of Vedic mantras. After this while continuing to chant Om dig a Shivling into that pit. There one must also install the idol of Lord Shiva while the chanting of the Panchashkar Mantra.

For worshipping Shiva, according to Shiv Purana, there are 16 treatments which are – Avahana, Asana, Padya, Arghya, Achamana, Snana or Abhisheka, Vastra, Yajnopavita, Gandha, Pushpa, Dhupa, Dipa, Naivedya, Tambula, Achamana, Mantra Pushpa. Those who will follow these 16 methods while worshipping Lord Shiva will get the best results. Circumambulating and saluting the shivling also leads to the attainment of Shiva’s blessings.
