Historical Origins of Raksha Bandhan: The festival of Raksha Bandhan has several folk stories associated with its origin but it is believed to have originated from ancient India. The first story which is read most often is from the epic called ‘Mahabharata’. As the tale goes, Lord Krishna injured his finger during a war and this is used to explain why the tip of the index finger is bent as one points. Draupadi Pandava queen stretched her sari and bind the wound of Krishna who has been injured from the battle. Moved by the gesture, Krishna assured Draupadi that he would defend her with his life.
Many years later, the Pandavas were caught in a game of dice with the Kauravas and the latter tried to strip Draupadi. Krishna ensured to fulfill the expectation through showcasing his godly strength in defending the integrity of the woman which is a true essence of Raksha Bandhan.
Significance of Raksha Bandhan: The festival of Raksha Bandhan is not restricted to any particular religion or culture as it relates back to the essence of unity and the sacred relationship shared by brother and sister. It used to be a child’s event that only focused on the bond of brothers and sisters but is now taken beyond brothers and sisters to cousins, friends, and other close friends and family members. That is why it is focused on love, care, and respect, which encompass humanity regardless of the difference in culture.
