Special Puja Rituals Ordered at UP Cow Shelters for Govardhan Puja

In a bid to preserve cultural and religious traditions, the Uttar Pradesh government has asked local authorities to arrange special puja rituals at stray cattle shelters across the state on Govardhan Puja day. The festivities are held a day after Diwali and are meant for worship of cows, which assume a holy position in Hinduism. The government has taken a detailed plan of action for safeguarding and paying tributes to these cows by taking proper care, especially during the festive season.

The guidelines are by Additional Chief Secretary K. Ravindra Naik. They say, elaborate puja rituals in general would be conducted with aplomb in designated cow shelters where destitute and stray cattle are put for shelter. The shelter would serve as an open platform for local area MLAs, MPs and ministers. The importance cited by the guidelines included maintenance of cleanliness, quality of fresh fodder, maintaining neatness, and all around access for puja performance.

The administration has arranged caretakers for each of the shelters who are supposed to manage the planned activities. In addition, nodal officers have been dispatched to all 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh to manage the cleanliness and other arrangements relating to the rituals. P.N. Singh, Animal Husbandry Director, said that the state had approximately 14 lakh stray cattle preserved in over 7,000 cow protection centers, all of which would be included in festival preparations.

It has also highlighted awareness of cow dung-based products, speeded up their usage, and thrust them into local markets. The state has aimed to make cows the centerpiece of cultural and religious celebrations. It has yelled out the importance of bringing in Diwali and Govardhan Puja.

These are government actions coming as a call to the local authorities to create special cattle-accident-preventing teams around strategic and main highways and create control rooms to respond appropriately in emergency situations involving animals. All these reflect efforts on behalf of the cattle in response to the high demand created by the celebrations.

This also, apart from having a religious importance on cow worship during Govardhan Puja, reveals the state’s effort in strengthening cattle protection and developing people’s consciousness regarding their care especially during the major festivals.
