Furious BCCI To File Complaint Against Mohsin Naqvi After Asia Cup Trophy Controversy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed its anger after Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi walked away with the Asia Cup trophy following India’s refusal to accept it in Dubai. The decision has stirred widespread debate as the BCCI prepares to lodge a “very strong protest” at the next ICC meeting scheduled for November.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia justified the team’s stance, saying India cannot accept a trophy from someone who is “waging a war against the country.” India had clinched a five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the final, with Tilak Varma shining with an unbeaten 69, earning the Player of the Match award for the summit clash.

“So far as the trophy is concerned, trophy distribution, India cannot take the trophy from the person who is waging a war against our country,” Saikia stated. He further added, “We have taken a decision not to accept the trophy but that does not allow the gentleman to take away the trophy and the medals to his hotel. This is unexpected, very childish in nature, and we will launch a very strong protest with ICC in the forthcoming ICC meeting to be held in Dubai in the first week of November.”
Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board and the Interior Minister of Pakistan, was at the center of this controversy. Despite the diplomatic and political tensions, Saikia praised the Indian team for their stellar performance throughout the tournament. India maintained an unbeaten run in the competition, winning all seven matches at the group stage and sweeping Pakistan 3-0 in the final round. “This is a big victory and a big-time cricket achievement for the country,” he said.
Regarding the Indian team’s decision to participate in the tournament despite criticism over engagement with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, Saikia clarified that the BCCI followed the policy set by the Indian government. “When it is a bilateral tournament, India is not going to play against Pakistan or any other hostile country, and BCCI has been doing it for the last 12 to 15 years. Now, the Government has said that in multinational tournaments — Asia Cup is a multinational tournament — or an international tournament where a lot of other countries are also involved, Indian teams, whether it is cricket or football, have to play,” he explained.
Saikia emphasized that India’s participation ensured compliance with international sports regulations. “Otherwise, our other games will suffer, or the federation will be banned by international federations. So we followed the policy of the central government and participated despite some protests or resistance from certain quarters,” he said.
The secretary also highlighted the pride and joy that India’s clean sweep against Pakistan brought to the nation. “Today, with this handsome win over Pakistan and the thumping victory of 3-0, I am sure we will bring a lot of happiness to our people. The country is really proud of the performance of the Indian cricket team,” Saikia remarked.

With the BCCI determined to address the incident officially at the ICC meeting, this controversy is likely to become a talking point in international cricket circles. The situation underscores the complex intersection of sports, diplomacy, and national pride, particularly in tournaments involving historic rivalries such as India and Pakistan.
The Asia Cup trophy incident will be remembered not just for the on-field performance but also for the strong stance taken by the BCCI and the Indian cricket team. The upcoming ICC meeting in Dubai is expected to witness the BCCI raising this issue formally, seeking accountability for Mohsin Naqvi’s actions, and reinforcing India’s position on maintaining the sanctity of sports amid geopolitical tensions.
