11 Indians have been released from Nigerian prison

11 Indians who had been in a Nigerian prison for almost two years have been released; the news was confirmed by External Affairs Sushma Swaraj.

Employees from a Merchant Navy firm, the crew’s ship had got stranded in Nigeria and then the entire crew was arrested for allegedly violating laws of international waters in the year 2014.

Swaraj has tweeted that she also appreciated the efforts of the High Commissioner in Nigeria B. N. Reddy for expediting their repatriation.

Meanwhile, the External Affairs Minister has said that the Government is making all its efforts to secure the release of two Indians who are abducted from Gboko, a town in the Benue state of north-central Nigeria.

One of them is Anish Sharma from Karnataka and another is identified as Mangipudi Sai Srinivas from Andhara Pradesh.

They were travelling to Dangote Cement Plant in their car from their residential quarters on last Wednesday, when they were attacked by a group of armed men and were kidnapped from a traffic signal.

Swaraj had already spoken to Anish Sharma’s wife and has also assured her that the Government is trying to do their best to secure their release from abductors.

In a tweet she said she has allotted a senior officer who updates the family regularly.
