Central government offers 20,000 crores to decongest Delhi

The central government has recently made an offer of 20,000 crore plan that stresses on improving public transport.

This plan is particularly about buses and to wean people away from owning cars. If the recommendations of a committee aimed with finding ways to decongest Delhi are accepted then this is how Delhi will be like in 2021 – more buses on the roads and fewer cars, cycle tracks for non-motorized travel, no more flyovers or signal free corridors and congestion fees.

The plan says that 2,000 new buses would be started immediately with 4,000 in the next phase. It has also been suggested to having bus stops within walking distance of one’s home or office; fares would be lower than the cost per kilometre cost of running a two wheeler.

The panel says that the residents should be encouraged to cycle at least short distances pointing out that 80% of passenger trips are below distances of 6 km and 60% of 4km – ideal for non- motorized transport.
