AFGHANISTAN’S RIHANNA
Meet Sonita Alizadeh, a sixteen year old Afghani refugee who was nearly sold by her parents in an arranged marriage for $9000. Once she survived the horror, she released a song ‘Brides for Sale’ and uploaded in on Youtube in 2014.
Attracting thousands of viewers to her video, Sonita, now 19, has escaped the prospect of a transactional marriage and is at the forefront of a global cultural movement. She announced herself and her cause to the world through her first song.
Sonita’s goal is to set up a nonprofit organisation and to put an end to the practice of early and forced marriage in one generation. This girl is a cross between Malala Yousufzai and Rihanna and we should thank her for what she is doing.
