Hingoli in Maharashtra is among the top three in third shortlisted Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory World (LIGO) in India. Hingoli site had been discussed over the past three years.
The project will have two L-shaped detectors with four kilometers long arms, The scientist associated to it have moved to India from Australia in 2011. Scientists associated with Indian-LIGO (called INDIGO) have ruled northern India for the site due its seismic activity. They believe that the Deccan Plateau is the most suitable for the detector as it is considered safe from earthquakes.
Maharashtra Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse said the government will ensure land acquisition smoothly if Hingoli is selected for the project.
Indigo is a replica of the two LIGO detectors, and many of its components are ready to be sent from the US. Scientists from India have contributed greatly to the discovery of gravitational waves, which was announced in the US Recently.
