One would’nt imagine to find such a gem in the middle of congested South Extension part 2 area of New Delhi. But there it is …Moth ki Masjid.
An imposing monument, which served not only as a mosque, but also a serai, was built by a Miya Bhoiya, who was said to be the Prime Minister of one of the last Delhi Sultanates in early 1500s.
According to legend, once he saw his overlord offer prayers over a grain of lentil. Declaring that such a seed is blessed, as the Emperor of India had prayed over it, he decided to plant it. With each successive planting over the years, the crop grew and grew. Finally Miya Bhiya sold it, and took permission from the Sultan, and built the mosque.
A few other legends, different versions of the same story. However, what ever the cause, the monument is a island of solace and serenity. When one enters it’s portals, one is transported, not only in time, but to a peaceful and quiet environment. A huge courtyard, with a defunct well in the center greets the visitor. Surrounded by high walls, the monument has three domes, with the central dome being the mosque, and the adjoining two as serais.
Easy to reach, the monument is a few minutes walk from the tony South Ex part 2 market, easily accessable from all parts of Delhi.
