DCW Boss Swati Maliwal steps in to have illegal liquer shop shut

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), Swati Maliwal, received a complaint from a women’s group, alleging that a liquer shop situated in the Ajmeri Gate area of Delhi was in violation of the Delhi Excise Rules.

According to these rules, no liquer vend is allowed within a certain distance of places of worship, or schools. Swati Maliwal forwarded this complaint to the Delhi Excise Commissioner’s office, and asked for action.

The Excise Comissioner’s office then sent the file to the Sub Divisional Magistrate of the area to make a survey, and give a factual report.

According to this report, the shop violates the distance criteria for both a temple and a mosque. Further that this area is also the pick-up and drop-off point for a number of school children, and is also in a high traffic congestion area.

Most likely, closure of the shop should take place soon. However, one question remains… how did the shop receive the license in the first place?
