As Pakistan’s PM Nawaz Sharif was delivering a speech, ironically at the US institute of Peace, a heckler screamed at him to “Free Balochistan.”
This incident brought the Pakistani Army’s (mis)conduct in the region over the past few decades to the fore. The army has been accused of rape, torture and abduction, and causing terror and intimidation with impunity.
The region has been fighting for freedom from Pakistan for a long time, with the latest spate being triggered by the murder of Nawab Akbar Bugti, a Baloch leader, in 2006, allegedly at the behest of Parvez Musharraf, the then Pakistan President.
