Sikhs exempt from wearing helmets in UK!
In UK wearing helmets while driving a two wheeler, or doing any hazardous job is compulsory, for all citizens. However in the year 1989 the British Government exempted the Sikhs from wearing them in the construction industry only.
In other sectors, if any Sikh was found only wearing his turban and not the helmet action was taken. In certain cases they were even dismissed from employment.
The Sikh associations had been pleading with the British Government to exempt them from wearing the helmets and cited their religious practice for support.
Recently the British government acceded to their plea and have issued orders exempting only the Sikh community from wearing helmets across the board.
The Public Relations Coordinator, Mr.Gurinder Singh Josen of the British Sikh Council has expressed happiness about the same on behalf of the UK Sikhs and has appreciated the UK government for their decision.
