Mor Sahib – the crocodile saint of Pakistan
A quaint shrine in Pakistan’s Karachi is once again thronged with pilgrims. No ordinary shrine, this Dargah of Saint Hasan-al-Maroof Sultan Manghopir, is the abode of Mor Sahib, a 87 year old crocodile who is venerated by the Siddi Muslims, a small sect within Islam.
This sect who desend from Bantu Africans are divided between India and Pakistan. Here they had been targetted by Taliban, fearing which they had literally gone underground for fear of their lives.
However, with the menace of Taliban receding, the Siddis have started visiting Mor Sahib with the hope of getting blessed by the crocodile who has seen much in his long and contended life.
