ISIS takes out ire on Palmyra

It seems that blowing up ancient monuments is a favourtie pastime for militants. First the Taliban blew up the ancient Bamiyan Buddha, and destroyed priceless antiquities in museums in Afghanistan, now it is the turn of ISIS in Syria.




Palmyra, established by Romans more than 2 thousand years ago, has been a living testiment of Syria’s ancient cultural heritage. Not only that, sites like this are also a huge revenue earner, not only for the exchequer, but also people associated with the tourism trade, bringing livelyhood to tens of thousands.

This ancient city has been under the control of ISIS for a while, and they have been destroying it up bit by bit. The latest to feel their ire is the ‘Arch of Triumph’, which according to reports has been blown up to smithereens by these barbarians, who have been condemned by the entire Islamic World, a lobby they claim to represent.
