Child Labour Survey in Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya

A recent study was released in which child labour was still prevalent in Coal Mining villages in East and West Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya.

There were roughly 2242 children working full time. Out of the 1,32,636 children surveyed, a 0.1% were both working and attending schools. A roughly 1.2% didn’t go to schools or even was working at all.

The study was conducted by the Department of Labour, and Employment, Government of Meghalaya. This was done in an attempt to classify the villages under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986 in which child labour was still prevalent.

The extent of the ramifications after the NGT ruling on Coal Mining towns such as Jaintia Hills has been realised, as it has exposed more of the vulnerabilities of these families with a poor economic background.
