Godavari and Krishna rivers linked
Taking a major step in reducing rain water dependence for farmers, the Andhra govrnment today linked Godavari and Krishna rivers.
Interlinking rivers was proposed decades ago by Engineer U. L Rao, who also served as India’s Minister for Irrigation and Electricity in 1963.
This proposal was once again mooted by PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but could not be implemented at that time.
This interlinking will prevent the over 3 thousand TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of Godavari rivers flood waters simply draining into the ocean. Instead, now this water will be put to good use by farmers in Krishna and Guntur districts, which have been facing acute shortage of water.
