When to say “NO”

As we grow up, we come across many instances in life where we have to choose between what is right and what is wrong. Needless to say, a lot of times we are not the sole decider of what is right or wrong; our decisions are highly influenced and manipulated by people around us. An ingredient of growing up involves one being susceptible and basing their decision on what they say. But, we have to learn to distinguish between listening to our judgment and those of others.

As teenagers, it is perfectly normal if we want to try out ‘new things’ and experiment with life. The adrenaline rush which makes us so excited can also cause us immense trouble. This is one reason why we have to learn to say “NO”. A friend may you ask you to go out for a late night party at some disc, smoke up with him/her, gate crash a party, get completely drunk and create a havoc, but you should learn to say No, if you are someone who has no intent of doing so. Psychology says that the majority of the times, we do things just to be accepted as a part of the group. Peer pressure is one cause why many people do things they normally wouldn’t have done.

These pressures are not only felt in a friend group, but also in relationships, at workplaces, at school and many more. People always think that disagreeing to something will put them in the bad book and make the other person extremely angry and disappointed or it will sound really impolite. But, we don’t have to be nice to others at our own expense. When we say “Yes” to someone for things we don’t want do, the other person starts taking us for granted and always tries to impose their authority on us.

It is for this reason, why we should learn to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong based on our own experiences and thinking and then decide for our self, if doing something is worth it or just a waste of time. Not only does this help us in leading an enhanced life, it also empowers us.
