Punjabi Fun at Mela Phulkari!


After the successful first edition, Mela Phulkari is back in the capital with the theme of ‘CONVERGENCE’ this year. Like the five rivers of Punjab are converging with each other, so are the facets of Mela Phulkari edition 2.

The exhibition will entail for an entire week from starting from 1st April to 8th of April at Indian Habitat Centre.


The simile is used to draw a close parallel between the merging rivers and varied diversity yet interconnected dimensions of Punjab.


“This project examine Punjab’s heritage, culture, craft, history and traditions translating these converging fundamentals into powerful narratives”, says Kirandeep Kaur, Member of Organizing committee

Traditional handicrafts and other stuffs that find place in Punjabi household are displayed here, and what caught eyes were the representations of farmers of Punjab, who are forced to live a pathetic life because of poverty.


The exhibition is conceptualized by the group of 1469. Each artwork and craftwork projects a certain message circling around the theme. For example: Patch worked garments inspired by, wood all block artwork using revolutionary figures.


Maharaja Ranjeet Singh used to hold Kite festival (Basant Mela) for common man. So, related it you will find a pillar with the kites talking about the life of a common man in Punjab.

Students of Pearl Academy have also participated in the Phulkari Mela and have beautifully decorated a boat. Apart from all these you will find hand woven phulkari dupattas, phankis (hand fans) and miniature manjas.


“Punjab is rich in its culture and we want people to know about it especially youngsters that’s why we have come up with this idea of Mela phulkari. This is our second edition and we think fields like agriculture and handicrafts needs more motivation as people don’t know about it. Through this exhibition people would able to know much more about the tradition of Punjab”, says Anupama, member of organizing committee.

There will be a series of discussions, performances, talks and demonstrations running throughout the exhibition.
