This Sunday saw the most innovative public initiative in a long time spread its roots and come to Dwarka. The event which started in Gurgaon initially, later went to the heart of the city in Connaught Place and has now entered Dwarka. The event instantly became the talk of the town when the rumors of Raahgiri coming to Dwarka came rolling around. The event was a huge success as a rough estimate says there were more than twenty thousand people who attended the event.

The chilly morning, followed by pleasant sunlight was a perfect day to get yourself and your family out to play. There were a lot of events there including football, cycling, zumba, aerobics, painting and even a flash mob.

The stages were set and people rushed to them as soon as the event started. People of all ages came to play. Whether it was an aunty playing a soccer match or a 5 year old dwindling in paint, it was all there. People also took this opportunity to get their skates and skateboards out.

The campaign to reclaim the streets has been very successful everywhere it has gone and just gets better and better everywhere it goes. This was the first of the many coming Raahgiri events in Dwarka and they only hope to get better.

The 1.4km stretch of road is hopefully going to be extended to 4.8km. If that is the case then they are going to plan it in a way where there is one stretch for only road activities and another one just for pedestrians and cyclists. As the weeks will go by, we will see more and more activities taking place and more campaigns regarding health and safety will be run.

The Delhi Development Authority played a huge part in helping the initiative along with the Delhi Police who were running mobile campaigns all around the event.

There was also a guest appearance by MP and actor Manoj Tiwari, who showed up for a short time and entertained the audience with a special song dedicated to Raahgiri and showed his support for the cause. MP Parvesh Sahib Singh, who accompanied Tiwari, said, “This is a brilliant concept to create awareness for health and safety.”
