Since the last decade or so we have been hearing people talking about voltage and considering it as the main feature of buying any lightening product. Who knew that buying any kind of electronic equipments could heavily affect our pockets? Especially when you belong to a lower middle class family, you want a tube-light or a bulb to live, for as long as possible because you want to save money for better things in life. However, now the scenario is different since the concept of LED entered the Indian electronic market.

The new way of watching videos with LED technology

To explain and introduce the concept of concentrating more on luminous rather than the voltage,Messe Frankfurt brought in the one of its kind LED EXPO 2014 where more than 200 companies from India, China, Finland, Korea and Taiwan showcased the best and the latest LED technology and applications. According to a 2012 news report in the UN environment program, India could cut its lighting electricity consumption by over 35 percent, which is equivalent to avoiding the construction of 11 large coal-fired power plants and taking over 10 million cars off the road. The annual saving would be up to 2 billion dollars by 2017.

Speaking on the occasion, Raj Manek, Executive Director and Board Member of Messe Frankfurt, said, “Messe Frankfurt is the leading player in the lighting industry and we run major lighting shows in the world so for us from the strategic point of view, it was very important to get the growing technology to the fast-growing market of India. We need to spread a message that we no longer have the need to look at the volts but only at the luminous and that’s what we are trying to do through this exhibition. We want the buyers, architects, businessman etc. to come and understand the upcoming technology and start implementing it. As far as the prices are concerned, once the market for this would grow, the prices would automatically drop down.”

Next year, the LED expo is expected to come up with more of international companies because of which one would get the knack of the different technologies available and also, due to their participation the Indian companies would have the chance of exporting their products which in turn means that the bigger their contract the lesser the prices, so the aim is to create a trading platform which reaches as many people as possible.

The LED Expo has also drawn a strong support from the various ministries of the government of India including the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and IT, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Urban Development, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs, Ministry of Corporate Affairs as well as BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd. Etc. Talking about the same, Mr. Pramod Kumar, Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India said, “Such an expo is really important and it gives an idea on saving on the cost especially when it comes to street lights. We keep advising the state for the usage of LED as the money that would be saved due to the usage of LED can be put into some other important development. We are working on making it a compulsion but since the urban development is in the hands of the state government, we can only request the state to implement it, rest I think such expos are a great step to spread knowledge about the benefits of using the LED.”

Adding to it, Pramod Kumar said, “As far as the reach of the LED to the grass root levels of India is concerned, the Government of India has started to take initiative to make LED bulbs available to the villagers at a reasonable price of just Rs.10”

Sandeep Garg- Senior Technical Specialist, Indo-German Energy Program, talked about how light cannot be mistaken for greater voltage and LED focuses on providing more luminous power using as low voltage as possible. He feels that the days are not far when LED products would get equal to the price of other luminous products. However, he also feels that the price is not the barrier as when you buy an LED which is supposedly a little more expensive than the usual luminous products, you are also saving money for four long years because of the life-time of one LED product. As far as health of the eyes is concerned, Mr.Garg says that as looking at the sun with naked eye can be dangerous similarly looking at the LED luminous gets difficult for the naked eye but they have taken care of the safety issue while making each and every product and have adhered to the BSI standard of photo biological safety on lamps.

LED Expo: changing the way you look at lights

The expo took place for three consecutive days: 5th, 6th and 7th at Hall No- 8,9,10 and 11 of the Pragati Maidan of New Delhi. It was one the biggest LED expos that has happened so far and is for only business purposes. The entire area was quite bright as LED sare taking over the market. The next LED Expo is scheduled to happen in May 2015 in Mumbai.
