One World News is here to tell you all about the latest collections in this year’s exhibition.
The exhibition, which is known for presenting designs from a wide variety states under one roof, has been happening every year since the last 20 years. It started with three to five exhibitions a year in metropolitan cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi but now it has stretched to cities like Bhopal, Lucknow, Ranchi and so on, with 40 plus exhibitions every year. The motive behind this exhibition is to uplift the silk weavers of India and give them a platform to earn their living and expose their talents on a bigger level.
Silk Fab exhibition is an initiative by the office of Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, and Government of India through National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) Ltd. to provide direct access to the handloom weavers to market their products to consumers in various cities of India. The participants are from various State Government Bodies/ Apex Societies, Primary Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies and Handloom Agencies. 85 agencies belonging to 15 states are participating. The exhibition has four participant weavers who are recipients of the National Award for design.
“For every weaver, who is weaving somewhere in the outskirts of the city or in the village, it is very hard to come into the big cities on their own and sell their work. So such exhibitions give an opportunity to these weavers to sell their products and earn their living. For people to know about this exhibition, we do publicity at a large scale. This is the first time that it is happening in Constitution Club, New Delhi, otherwise it usually happens in Bikaji Cama Place,” says H.M.Sharma, Exhibition curator, National Handloom Development Corporation, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
The exhibition does not allow any traders to participate, only Ngos or the weavers are allowed to take part. “The role of government is that they are funding this whole idea and by doing this they are helping in developing the status of the weavers because if they would not get the opportunity to sell the sarees directly, then they would not be able to make profits. We do not even interfere in the pricing. They decide the price and sell it keeping in mind their profit margin.”
Silk Products drawn from some of the exotic locations of India are on display and sale at the exhibition. A brief list is given below: –

Talking about the westernisation in clothing, “Well, the weavers are intelligent enough to know what is in trend and where. We all know that now no one wears sarees or even suit unless it is a traditional occasion. So keeping that in mind, the exhibition also exhibits kurtis, tops and even pants which are trendy as well as traditional. So yes, there is a lot for the consumers to take from here at affordable rates”, says H.M.Sharma.
