Honda to Set up World’s Largest Scooter Factory
Honda is going to set up the World’s largest scooter factory in Gujarat. The factory would be set- up in Vithalapur, around 80 km from Ahmedabad. Honda is planning to invest 1,100 crores in next few months on the project.
The scooter manufacturing factory in Gujarat would be set up in an area of 250 acres. The plant will be able to manufacture 1.2 billion scooters per year.
Although, Honda is primarily a car manufacturer it now aims to capture a bigger share of the two wheeler market in the country. Currently, Honda manufactures around 4.5 million scooters every year.

When the Gujarat factory will start,the company would be able to manufacture 5.7 billion scooters every year. The project would also create employment opportunities in the country, especially in Gujarat. It would directly create about 3,ooo jobs.
The Company sells more automatic scooters as compared to their motorbikes in India and ‘Activa’ is Honda’s bestselling product.
Even though Honda has taken over a large chunk of the two-wheeler market, the company aims to capture an even greater share of the market with the construction of this plant.
Honda’s biggest rival is Hero Motocorp. The motive of Honda behind this scooter project is that it wants to give stiff competition to Hero Motocorp.

Honda wants to become India’s largest two wheeler manufacturer before 2020. If the company manages to become India’s largest two wheeler maker, it would enable them to restore their position amongst the top automobile manufacturers in the world.
This will be the fourth plant set- up by the Honda Company in India. There are three more, one in Haryana, Rajasthan and Karnataka. The fourth plant would enhance its cumulative production capacity. The company would be able to produce 58 lakhs units in 2015 and 2016.
Honda believes that the fourth plant will help them become the no. one name in two wheelers in India.
