World’s Biggest Telescope: India Collaborates With World
India has joined the US and other three countries in a project to build the World’s biggest telescope on the Island of Hawaii. The budget of the project is dollar 1.47 billion. Apart from US& India, Japan, China, and Canada are also involved in the project.

In the declarativeceremony of the thirty meter telescopewhich was held on October 7th, an Indian delegationwas also invited.
This thirty meter telescope will enable scientists to study objects further then the range provided by the current telescopes. It will also provide information about the early stages of evolution of the Universe.
Indian cabinet last month gave its approval for the project. They found this collaboration important for further development in field of Science. Total cost that India would bare would be Dollar 212 billion from 2014 to 2023. 70% of the contribution done by the India will be through in -‘Kind’

Interestingly, high technology items used for the TMT project will be produced by India. This is the first science project shortlisted after Modi’s visit.
From the Indian point of view it is really a significant project because it will expand the role of Indian Science Community in international technology and fundamental research.
It will be a joint project from Indian Department of Science &Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy.
Apart from these two departments, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences, Nanital and Inter-University centre for Astronomy will also participate in TMT project.
