Attractive, Ringed, and Unapproachable: My Public Flirt-Deterrent Strategy

Ju Isen – Too Attractive for My Own Good? A Fake Ring’s Tale

Ju Isen, a Brazilian model and influencer with 2.6 million Instagram followers, has come up with a rather unique way to deal with unwanted attention from male admirers: an artificial wedding band. The 39-year-old, presently single, said that the unwanted attention she began receiving: at the gym, supermarket, pharmacy, and even the pool became overwhelming. Finally, in her search for the ultimate escape plan, Isen found that a simple ring would act as an instant deterrent, much like a click on mute to unwanted flirtation.

This unpretentious piece has, for years, declared availability without saying much. Isen explained that while it does not identify her as `married’, it greatly reduces the instances of unwanted advances. The moment the ring became a permanent fixture in her setting, she noticed a stark difference in the way men approached her: They were almost second-guessing, weighing in their minds whether or not to approach her. This little cue was making all sorts of difference in her experiences of gyms, public transport, bars, and the like, enabling her to glide through her day with less interference.

One example she recalled that stood out was at a pharmacy, where the tone of a particular gentleman’s random flirting changed when he saw her ring. That has been a pattern for her, therefore solidifying her confidence that the ring acts in defense of her boundaries. Her point was that she does not intend to mislead anyone, only to convey clearly that undesirable advances do not interest her. This is a subtle and private approach to expressing her ill feelings about being approached for any romantic efforts, avoiding potential situations that could turn awkward.

Interestingly, Isen ceased to wear the ring one summer a couple of years ago, and that was when she noticed a shift in men’s attention. While she continued to receive some amount of attention from men, it did not seem to be as rampant as before her little break. She credits this change in attitude to the birth of dating apps, saying technology has made guys less inclined to approach in real life. She lamented how the good old days have passed: old-school approaches, even awful ones, were getting standard and testing, declaring, “Technology killed flirting!” Flirtation got blurrier, along with relationships that feel emptier and mechanistic.

Nevertheless, Isen would wear the fake band, which she values for the peace it gives her. She emphasized that while she might not miss being hit on every second of the day, a man trying to engage her would have to see through that deception. If a kind of chemistry exists, she could break the news of the truth behind the ring. Meaning, for Ju Isen, the ring isn’t just an accessory; it’s a personal filter that permits the occasional preference in public life.
