April 26 marks the birth date of one of the greatest action stars and martial artists past and present-Jet Li. Born in 1963 in Beijing, China, Jet Li’s story from a young Wushu champion to an international film sensation leaves nothing to be desired. It was and still is the perfect combination of grace, discipline, and explosive talent that set him apart early in life and continues mesmerizing millions around the globe.

From Wushu Champion to Movie Star

Jet Li commenced with Wushu training at 8 years of age. He was nurtured under professional coaches and soon became a household name, winning his first national championship at the age of 11. Joined the ranks of other championship martial artists in his country when film opportunities began to sprout. The young actor’s first feature film Shaolin Temple became an instant sensation and renewed interest in Chinese martial arts cinema in the 1980s.

Among these films is Once Upon a Time in China where he played the role for the great folk hero Wong Fei-hung. His fluid style of fighting and vibrant screen presence made him one of the most popular faces from across Asia.

Hollywood Success and Worldwide Renown

The journey from HongKong to Hollywood for Jet Li in the late 1990s widened the horizon for him. Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) marked Li’s entry into Hollywood. He acted as a villain opposite Mel Gibson in the action flick. The role exuded his ferocity, bestowed amongst audiences the notion that he was a screen fighting machine. Romance Must Die, The One, Kiss of the Dragon, and Hero are just a few examples of his next successful blockbuster titles.

These Hollywood assignments granted Li the chance to blend Eastern martial arts with Western action filmmaking while interestingly projecting the values that will once again incite an appreciation of martial arts among international crowds.

Li has dealt with his health problems through the years, which include serious hyperthyroidism; he remained a symbol of power and tenacity combined with compassion above all else.
