Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: Lipulekh Pass Reopens June 30, 2025, After Five-Year Suspension

Setting off for resumption across the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand in India on June 30, 2025, is the ancient pilgrimage of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. This much-famed pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and adherents of Bon has been on hold for the last five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and border tensions between India and China.

Importance of the Yatra and the Route Via Lipulekh Pass:

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is spiritually relevant. According to Hindu beliefs, Mount Kailash is the residence of Lord Shiva, in Buddhism it is a sacred site, the place where the first Jain Tirthankara attained enlightenment, and the Bon tradition recognizes it as an honored mountain. In Hindu belief, Lake Mansarovar was conjured by Lord Brahma and provides a source of holiness.

Historically, the Lipulekh Pass has served as one of the principal routes for Indians undertaking the pilgrimage. While the route, due to the high altitude of around 17,000 feet, could be a challenge, it is the most direct access to Tibet. Historically, pilgrims would trek large portions of this route; however, with the completion of the Tawaghat-Lipulekh road in 2022 by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), today the entire journey on the Indian side is motorable for the very first time.

Resume Details in 2025:

  • The Yatra will commence on June 30, 2025.
  • The pilgrimage will once again proceed via the traditional Lipulekh Pass in the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.
  • The Yatra is to be jointly organized by the Uttarakhand Government and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) will now conduct the Yatra.
  • Approximately 250 pilgrims will be allowed to undertake the Yatra in the year 2025; these mainly will be divided into five groups of 50 each.
  • The program: A 22-day Yatra will begin from Delhi. Pilgrims will stay for a night in Tanakpur and Dharchula in Uttarakhand and arrive at Gunji, where a two-day acclimatization and medical check-up from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will be done. The first group will cross into China via Lipulekh Pass on July 10, 2025, while the final group is expected back in India by August 22. The return journey will include overnight halts in Bundi, Chaukori, and Almora before reaching Delhi.
  • Medical Check-up: All pilgrims will receive check-ups; the first in Delhi and again in Gunji, to check on their fitness for the high-altitude trek.

Impact of Resumption:

The current resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through the Lipulekh Pass after an extended absence is a great moment for innumerable devotees. Even so, it helps meet their very delayed spiritual aspirations and reinforces the cultural and religious links that India maintains with the Tibet Autonomous Region in China.
