From Protest to Progress: How Earth Day Became a Worldwide Movement
Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future: Why Every Action Counts
Earth Day is observed annually on April 22 to promote environmental protection and increase public awareness of environmental issues. Furthermore it reminds us of how lovely our planet is. Originally observed in 197p as a small environmental movement, Earth Day has since expanded into a worldwide call to action that motivates millions of people to take both small and large actions to protect the planet’s natural resources and beauty.
The background of Earth Day
Gaylord Nelson a U. S. senator, was the first to organize Earth Day in 1970. S. politico who aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues nationally. At the time there were few laws protecting the environment factories dumped waste into rivers and cities were suffocated by smog. Nelson was motivated to organize a public protest for the environment by the fervor of the student anti-war movement.
Over 20 million Americans including families, communities, teachers and students demonstrated in parks, streets and auditoriums on April 22 1970. Significant environmental laws in the United States were sparked by that first Earth Day. The establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Clean Water and Air Acts are among them.
Earth Day is observed in over 190 countries today serving as a reminder that protecting the environment is a global duty.

The decisions we make today will determine the world that future generations inherit as we confront a future shaped by climate change. Instead of being merely a day on the calendar let Earth Day become a way of thinking, a way of life and a commitment we make each and every day.
