Rain, Dust Storm Expected In Delhi; Rajasthan Scorches Above 45°C

There’s a possibility of some rain and dust storms in Delhi today; severe heatwave condition prevailing in Rajasthan as the temperature crosses 45 degrees in Fahrenheit. The weather change is forthcoming in Delhi today with rainfall and then a possible dust storm that will provide much-needed relief from the increasing temperatures. To that effect, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that parts of the national capital region should expect cloudy skies with gusty winds and scattered rainfall by late evening. The cause of this weather anomaly is the approaching Western disturbance moving towards northern India that is likely to affect the weather changes in Delhi and its surrounding states.

Predictably, the dust storm and rain in Delhi are forecast to slightly lower the temperature as respite after days of what has been intolerable heat. Strong winds, likely a breathless 30-40 km/h, may clear the air a little, bringing down steadily rising pollution levels. Citizens have been advised to take precautions, especially if outside, because good visibility can be hampered by dust and winds.

As Delhi braces for its change in weather, Rajasthan has not missed a beat on withering under a scorching heatwave. Most cities in the state reported maximum temperatures of more than 45 degrees Celsius. Cities like Barmer, Phalodi, and Ganganagar have become some of the hottest cities in the country. They all added up and the harshness of the heats made life particularly difficult, condensing activities in the daytime, such that the early morning and late evenings are the only possible times for many citizens to engage in outside businesses.

The IMD has issued a red alert to parts of western Rajasthan about extreme heatwave conditions that will probably continue for days. Health officials have again advised people to keep hydrated, not to expose themselves to the sun during peak hours, and to take precautions against heat stroke. The schools in some districts, therefore, have been instructed to make adjustments in timing or teach the online method to save students from heat strokes.

This sudden change in the weather across northern India-from rains in Delhi to scorching heat in Rajasthan-shows the changing nature of the summer climate of the region. Meteorologists attributed the heatwave in Rajasthan to dry northwesterly winds, clear skies, and high solar radiation that have all pushed temperatures way above normal levels for the month of April.

By and large, isolated rain and dust storms might also be experienced in parts of Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh as the weather system affecting Delhi progresses across the northern plains. Such short, brief but intense weather events are typical of what one can experience in the pre-monsoon season, wherein sudden storms, accompanied by lightning, followed by very short spells of rain, are the norm.

Today showers promises the residents of Delhi to break slightly the intense summer heat. However, it has become a serious concern for residents in Rajasthan as a heatwave incidence that requires extreme caution and community efforts for safety.
