Why Are They Giving Me The Award?’: MS Dhoni Reacts Humbly After POTM Honour in CSK vs LSG Clash

MS Dhoni humbly questioned his Player of the Match award after CSK’s win vs LSG, highlighting Noor Ahmad’s performance instead.

MS Dhoni Wins Player of the Match After 6 Years, But Says ‘Why Are They Giving Me The Award?

The Chennai Super Kings propelled themselves back to life after their recent five-match losing streak by pulling off a dramatic five-wicket victory against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium on Monday night in the IPL 2025 season. Leading from behind the stumps, MS Dhoni proved once more why he is one of the most celebrated names in the world of cricket, yet more importantly, his humility rather than his heroics drew all the attention.

Valuable contributions from the 43-year-old Dhoni steered them across the finish line. He showed the young guns how it is done by pulling back the clock with his trademark wicketkeeping style and being involved in all three major dismissals: a brilliant catch, a neat stumping, and a vital run-out. If that was not enough, he strolled in at one of the tightest moments of the chase and peppered the bowlers scoring 26 runs not out off 11 balls, thereby hitting the winning runs for CSK with three deliveries to spare.

The Player of the Match award went to Dhoni for his complete performance. This award is as noteworthy as his first since IPL 2019. Typical to his style, however, he completely shunned the limelight and questioned, “Even today I was like, ‘Why are they giving me the award?’” Dhoni said during the post-match ceremony. “I feel Noor bowled really well. With the new ball and when Noor and Jaddu bowled four-five overs together – these were the two phases where we did really well.”

It was more than just courtesy; in good faith, Dhoni believed that CSK spinner Noor Ahmad deserved the award. The young spinner had bowled quite beautifully and could be credited for keeping BLSG to a principled total. Dhoni by once again showcasing his humility reminded why he is a favourite not just for his cricketing brain but also for his courteous sportsmanship.

When asked about when he last had the Player of the Match award with him, Dhoni seemed quite surprised. When it was confirmed that it had been since 2019 since his last award, he broke into a hearty laugh, “That’s a long time back!”

Despite the win providing a boast to morale, CSK sits at the bottom of the points table, having won two of the seven matches played so far. But the victory is a much-needed confidence booster for the camp. “It’s good to win a game,” Dhoni reflected. “When you play a tournament like this, you want to win games. Unfortunately, the earlier matches didn’t go our way for whatever reason. There could be lots of reasons. So, it’s nice that we have a win on our side. It gives confidence to the whole team and helps us in the areas in which we want to improve.”

At 43, Dhoni’s presence on the field continues to serve as the guiding light for CSK. Whether it is by being lightning quick behind the stumps or being explosive with the bat, or simply walking the talk when it comes to humility, his impact cannot be denied. While the win on Monday night may not guarantee an opening for the playoffs just yet, it could just be the flicker of hope for a late-season resurgence led by none other than Captain Cool himself.
