Amarnath Yatra 2025: Your Comprehensive Pilgrimage Guide

Winters begin in mid-October, and that is when Amarnath Yatra is to be officially announced by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Beginning in the year 2025, the Yatra shall catch the longtime awaited spiritual journey into the sacred Amarnath Cave on its grand view of July 3rd and finally arrive on August 9th, 2025, on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. It is a long 52 days of walking—one of the longest pilgrimage walks in Hindu history. The two routes that one can walk along into Amarnath are the longer Pahalgam route (approximately 48 km) through the Anantnag district, and the shorter but difficult Baltal route (approximately 14 km) through Ganderbal district.

Registration Requirements:

Registration for the Amarnath Yatra 2025 started on April 14, 2025, hence the pilgrims may opt for either online or offline registration:

Online Mode:

Please visit the official website of the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), jksasb.nic.in. Click on the “Online Services” link and click “Yatra Permit Registration.” Please carefully read all the instructions, indicate your acceptance to the terms and conditions, and proceed to register. You must fill out your personal details, including full name, chose yatra dates, Aadhaar number, and active mobile phone number. Aside from that, you will be uploading a current passport-sized photograph and scanned copy of the Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) to be uploaded. Following successful verification of the mobile number through OTP, a payment link for registration (approximately ₹220) will be sent. After payment is successful, the Yatra Permit will be available for download.

Offline Mode:

Offline registration can be done by pilgrims by visiting authorized branches of designated banks (of which more than 540 have been empaneled all over India, such as SBI, PNB, J&K Bank, and Yes Bank) or registration centers set up by the Jammu and Kashmir administration at Vaishnavi Dham, Panchayat Bhawan, and Mahajan Hall. Token slips are issued approximately three days prior to the desired yatra date at these centers. Registered pilgrims are, thereafter, to go through a medical checkup and then finally real registration at Saraswati Dham. The RFID card needs to be collected at the allowed Jammu center on the same day.

A Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC), issued by an authorized doctor/medical institution, is mandatory for registration. The CHC form can be downloaded from the SASB website, and the pilgrim must undergo all requisite medical tests by a government-authorized doctor or hospital for the issuance of this certificate.

Journey Options and Routes:

There are two alternative trekking routes available for the devotees to reach the cave of Amarnath:

The Pahalgam route:

This traditional and longer route, approximately 48 kilometers each way, requires anywhere from three to five days of trekking, often set against spectacular vistas, with several well-defined resting points along the way.

Baltal Route:

The trek is shorter yet much steeper; around 14 km one way, most pilgrims do an up-down trip in one day. Suitable only for physically fit individuals since, because of the tricky terrain and lesser rest houses, it is generally not advised for any other type of individual.

Helicopter services provide the option of a much faster and less strenuous journey to the holy cave for pilgrims. It connects Baltal and Pahalgam with Panjtarni-helicopter services from here take the last leg of the journey that is approximately 6 km from the holy cave. Bookings are made online, usually through the official Shrine Board website or its authorized partner platforms.

Important Guidelines for Pilgrimage:

* Every person who undertakes yatra should register.
* Children below 13 years, adult above 75 years and women with pregnancy more than six weeks will not be allowed for doing yatra.
