A Virgin Atlantic offering from London to Mumbai made an emergency landing at Diyarbakir Airport (DIY) in Turkey due to a medical emergency, and more than 200 Indian passengers have been stranded for over 16 hours in the absence of any effective travel arrangements by the airport. The airport, not equipped to handle such situations, has been trying to assist the distressed passengers.

The passengers had panicked one due to an emergency landing, but at that moment, the plane developed a possible technical fault, which made the whole affair worse. It was announced to the passengers that alternate arrangements were being made for an aircraft, but no time indications were proffered. Many were understandably upset with the total lack of communication on the part of the airline.

A passenger stuck at Diyarbakir for many hours, with no firm arrangements made for accommodation, illustrated the gravity of the situation: “We are here for hours without proper accommodation. We cannot leave the airport as it is a military base. Absolutely no information is provided on when we will reach Mumbai.” The lack of basic amenities, coupled with uncertainty over the next leg of their journey, has compounded the woes of the passengers.

Some of the angry passengers were crying for help from the airline and local supervision to start organizing alternative transportation. Many took to social media to demand immediate assistance by tagging Virgin Atlantic and authorities.

While they await further developments, passengers’ safety is becoming a major concern in this scumbag draw of an airlines wherein they have to learn how to amend protocol in emergency management. The incident is, in fact, a reflection of the preparedness of agencies and institutions that are often without capable infrastructure in dealing situations of this kind.
