India Condemns Pakistan’s ‘Unjustified’ Kashmir Reference at UNGA Session
In a UNGA session on March 15, 2025, India had a strong word with Pakistan concerning Jammu and Kashmir that India considered “unjustified.” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, was reacting to remarks made by the former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, Tehmina Janjua, who had raised the Kashmir issue during her address.
According to Harish, these references would not legitimize Pakistan’s territorial claims or absolve it of its responsibility in perpetrating cross-border terrorism. “The fanatical mindset of this nation is well known, as also its record of bigotry. Such efforts will not change the reality that Jammu and Kashmir was, is, and will always be an integral part of India.”
Harish went on to criticize Pakistan’s history of religious intolerance and bigotry, indicating that Pakistan’s continued references to Jammu and Kashmir in international forums are part of a broader strategy to divert focus from its domestic troubles and terrorism support. He asserted that these attempts are indeed futile and do not change the ground reality that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.
Pakistan has consistently raised the Kashmir issue in international forums, and India has responded by re-asserting its sovereignty over this contested territory. While the international community has generally viewed the dispute as a bilateral question to be settled between India and Pakistan, India has argued consistently that Jammu and Kashmir are integrally part of its territory and any attempt by Pakistan to question that is untenable.
This recent session of the UNGA with its interventions reflected the constant friction that has existed for the two nations over Kashmir. India’s firm rebuttal, in this light, conveys India’s commitment to protection of its territorial integrity and to countering those narratives it feels are misleading or unfounded. With such diplomatic exchanges between the two nations being so common, the way in which the international community watches on awaits a peaceful resolution to the long-dragging dispute.
