Indian Student Ranjani Srinivasan Self-Deports After US Revokes Visa

Ranjani Srinivasan is an Indian doctoral student pursuing Urban Planning at Columbia University in the United States. She entered the U.S. on an F-1 student visa and had previously attended Harvard University.

On March 5, 2025, the United States Department of State revoked Srinivasan’s visa, accusing her of activities that allegedly support Hamas, which has been designated a terrorist organization. In this context, the DHS states that she has been advocating for violence and terrorism.

After the visa was revoked, Srinivasan used the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App to self-deport on March 11, 2025, shortly after the revocation. The app allows individuals to facilitate their own departure from the U.S. The DHS Secretary, Kristi Noem, commented on this situation, indicating that residing and studying in the U.S. is a privilege, and those who advocate for violence and terrorism should lose that privilege.

Defending Srinivasan, Ramzi Kassem stated that the visa revocation violated her rights and that her conduct constituted protected political speech. This incident is indicative of a sweeping federal attack on pro-Palestinian activism at Columbia University. Mahmoud Khalil and Leqaa Kordia are also students facing lawsuits for similar activities.

Columbia has found itself facing significant backlash, including the withdrawal of $400 million in grants and contracts from the federal government. They are mounting pressure upon the university to make changes in order to avert more penalties.

The developments epitomize the greater scrutiny applied to foreign students engaged in political activity, especially when it concerns organizations designated as terrorist entities by the U.S. government. It further creates a situation where questions are raised with respect to national security versus free speech rights inside academic institutions.
