India Cuts Tariffs on US Bourbon Whiskey from 150%
According to the White House, tariffs imposed by India on American products are high: 150% on alcoholic drinks and 100% on agricultural products. With these tariffs, the worry on fair trade practice and reciprocity arose.
During the White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt spoke about these tariffs, noting that President Trump believes in reciprocal trade as a matter of fairness and balance. Leavitt explained that these high tariffs are a hindrance for American businesses and workers, including Kentucky bourbon exports to India as an example.
There are other countries besides India that impose tariffs, as Leavitt explains, with Canada imposing tariffs of nearly 300% on American cheese and butter, and Japan tariffs rice at 700%. Such tariffs demand fair trade practices and reciprocity.
President Trump has criticized India’s high tariffs in this regard, and he cited that India has committed to lower its tariffs. However, these tariffs still exist, and American businesses and workers are suffering as a result.
This tariff issue underscores complex interrelations in trade among nations, and the need for fair and balanced practices. As the White House is pressing for reciprocity, it is yet to be seen what will be the outcome of India’s and other countries’ reactions on that count.
