A distressing criminal attack took place late Thursday night near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi which resulted in sexual assaults against two women victims including a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old local homestay operator in Karnataka. Sanapur Lake became the venue for the attack when the victims engaged in stargazing together with three male visitors. 
Multiple reports note that two women accompanied by three male foreign tourists from the United States and Maharashtra and Odisha sat next to the canal for music and star viewing after they ate dinner. The three men arrived on their motorcycle shortly before 11 PM to ask the group about local fuel stops before using abusive language and assaulting the victims. The attackers asked for ₹100 but when no one was available to comply with their request they became hostile. The group declined to pay money so the speaking Kannada and Telugu men started to verbally attack them. 
The incident rapidly deteriorated when the attackers forced the male tourists into the Tungabhadra left bank canal. One individual escaped although wounded while the other made it out intact but the third tourist from Odisha remained absent. The search efforts launched by fire officials alongside police dog squad members ended in disaster when they retrieved the remains of the missing person on Saturday afternoon.

Immediately after assaulting the men the attackers committed gang rape upon the two women. The victims expressed their situation to law enforcement and this activated efforts to track down their attackers. Police in Koppal affirmed through Superintendent of Police Ram L Arasiddi that a BNS case details gang rape and attempted murder along with other specified sections.
The occurrence of sexual violence against tourists in Hampi expanded global worries regarding the safety of visitors at this international tourist destination. Community members jointly request authorities to boost security protocols which aim to stop future similar incidents from occurring. The ongoing police investigation follows multiple criminal procedures of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita due to attempted murder and gang rape crimes.
