The model and actress Ranya Rao aged 32 years arrested to transporting gold into India. Rao admitted to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) during her arrest in Hyderabad that she had journeyed to numerous countries between Dubai and Europe and America and the Middle East to traffic gold.
Modus Operandi
According to Rao she carried her contraband either by packing it into her luggage or hiding it on her body because her fame exempted her from inspection. She would stop at jewellers and traders in India where she sold the gold that brought substantial financial profit.
Investigation and Arrest
The DRI monitored Rao since several months leading up to her arrest because they suspected she helped smuggle gold. The DRI officials stopped Rao at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on February 24, 2025. The examination of her luggage showed officials 1.6 kilograms of gold with an estimated worth of 80 lakh rupees.
Charges and Consequences
The Customs Act, 1962 has led to charges against Rao whereby she might receive up to seven years in jail and pay a fine. Core assets of Rao include both her travel authorization and all bank assets subject to DRI actions.
