Background of Cereal
Ferdinand Schumacher, an immigrant from Germany, initiated the cereal revolution in 1854 using a manual oats grinder in the rear of a tiny shop in Akron, Ohio. His German Mills American Oatmeal Company was the country’s first commercial producer of oatmeal. In 1877, Schumacher embraced the Quaker emblem, becoming the first to register a trademark for a breakfast cereal.
Granula, the first breakfast cereal, was created in the United States in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson, who ran our home on the Hillside, which was eventually succeeded by the Jackson Sanatorium in Dansville, New York. The cereal never gained popularity because it was impractical, requiring the heavy bran nuggets to be soaked overnight for them to become soft enough to consume.

The cereal industry emerged from a blend of genuine religious convictions and a business focus on nutritious foods. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg conducted experiments with granola. He cooked wheat, flattened it into thin sheets, and baked the resulting flakes in the oven; he obtained a patent in 1891. In 1895, he introduced Cornflakes, which instantly gained a national market.
In 1906, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg’s sibling, William K. Kellogg, after laboring for John, separated, acquired the corn flakes rights from his brother, and established the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company. His signature on each package turned into the brand’s hallmark and guarantee of quality.
In 1898, Charles W. Post launched Grape-nuts and quickly thereafter introduced Post Toasties.
Due to Kellogg and Post, Battle Creek, Michigan is often referred to as the “Cereal Capital of the World.”
